Welcome to the Beta release of the Babson Sustainabilty Portal. This site is intended to serve as a resource for students of sustainability and clean technology. We see our audience as both students currently matriculating at Babson, and the larger community of “students”—including faculty, alumni, practitioners, etc.—who seek to learn more about this critically important field.
While some of the content is specific to life at Babson, such as the Course Offerings and People sections, many of these pages are filled with industry-specific content such as the Industry Links and Top VC Firms in CleanTech. Of particular interest to those who are green to the industry is CleanTech 101. This section provides a comprehensive introduction to the CleanTech industry, as well as a framework for understanding the drivers, segmentation, stakeholders, and implications of the CleanTech revolution.
We hope that you find this site to be highly relevant and of much value. It is designed to serve you: the student of sustainability and clean technology. To those ends, we welcome your feedback and are open to any suggestions you might have. We expect and eagerly anticipate the portal’s continual evolvement for you, by you.

When: January 17th to March 27th
What: RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how thier results fluctuate against other shcools and use this to rally their campus commnunities to reduce and recycle more.
Goals of RecycleMania:
1. Have a fair and friendly recycling competition.
2. Increase recycling participation by students and staff
3. Heighten awareness of schools’ waste management and recycling programs
4. Expand economic opportunities while adressing environmental issues in a positive way
5. Lower waste generated on-campus by reducing, reusing and recycling
6. Have the competition act as a catalyst for colleges and universities to build and expand waste reduction programs on campus
Why: Colleges and universities are small cities that consume large amounts of resources and generate much solid waste. Whether a school has an extensive waste reduction program or is just getting basic recycling collections off the ground, experience has shown that all shcools have potential to further reduce the amount of resources they consume and dispose of. RecycleMania provides a tool for campus recycling coordinators, student green teams and facility service professionals to engage thier campus community in recycling and waste reduction in a fun and friendly way. RecycleManina anticipates that environmental messages cannot always motivate action by themselves and seeks to present waste reduction in terms any college student can appreciate:beating the cross town rival1 In the process, participation in the competition familiarizes students with a campus’s environmental programs and hopefully instills in them a life-long habit. Past surveys have indicated 80% of participating schools experience a noticeable increase in recycling collection during the competition
